There’s a benefit electronics recycling event coming up later this month called Phoenix Recycles Day. It’s sponsored by a valley law firm, Gordon & Rees.

Our recycling partner, Westech Recyclers is handling the donations — for St. Mary’s Food Bank. Friday afternoon, March 30th, from 3pm to 7pm, and the next day, Saturday, March 31st, from 9am to 1pm. It is a strictly recycling event. It is not a swap meet, like the Boy Scout Electronicfest.

They will be shredding documents on Saturday, March 31st (that day only). The first 2 bags or boxes to be shredded are free, and a suggested donation of $5 per bag/box for St. Mary’s Food Bank after that.

Here are more details on the Phoenix Recycles Day:

(PHOENIX) – The Phoenix office of Gordon & Rees LLP, a top national law firm, is sponsoring the inaugural Phoenix Recycles Day event Friday, March 30, and Saturday, March 31. The event is designed to provide Valley area residents a means to safely dispose of their unwanted or outdated electronic devices, appliances and paperwork.

The drop-off sites are at St. Theresa Catholic School at 50th Street and Thomas, and four Del Tacorestaurants around the Valley. The participating Del Taco locations include: Glendale on 79th Avenue near the 101, Chandler on West Ray Road near Dobson Road, Mesa on Southern east of Val Vista Drive and North Phoenix near Tatum Boulevard and Bell Road. Times for all sites are 3pm- 7pm, Friday March 30, and 9am-1pm, Saturday March 31. People can drop off electronics both days, but the paper shredding service is only available on Saturday the 31st.

“You can bring nearly anything with a plug to recycle. We are expecting to accumulate about 100,000 pounds of e-waste over the course of the event,” said Steve Tully, Co-Managing Partner at Gordon & Rees. “Phoenix Recycles Day is the perfect opportunity to help people safely get rid of their e-waste, and raise money for a good cause.”

Gordon & Rees has solicited the help of two local companies,Westech Recyclers, and Shred-It, to ensure all recyclables are safely and thoroughly discarded. Shred-It will dispose of two boxes of documents, per person, at no charge, with a suggested donation of five dollars per box to be shredded after that. Donations will benefitSt. Mary’s Food Bank.

The Electronic Takes Back Coalition (ETBC) says Americans throw away more than three million tons of e-waste every year. The group says only 15% of that is recycled. They say a large part of that are computers, monitors and televisions that clog up landfills. Some devices can contain hazardous materials and consumers can even risk their personal information being discovered if electronics are not properly erased.

“It is important to make sure these items are disposed of safely, to minimize the amount of waste in our landfills and keep peoples’ proprietary information private,” said Tully. “This event has the potential to help so many here locally. Gordon & Rees is proud to sponsor it.”

For a full list of accepted electronics and specific drop-off addresses, go tohttp://www.phoenixrecyclesday.com, and follow the event on Twitter at @phxrecyclesday.

Gordon & Rees is a national law firm with over 480 attorneys. The firm specializes in litigation , strategic advice, and business transactions services from global corporations to startup companies. For more information visit www.gordonreesphx.com.

Boy Scouts from Troop 446 have a computer swap meet in Scottsdale, Arizona the 3rd Sunday morning of every month. They also have a blog, which replaced their html website that had been up for several years. The Electronicfest blog is like an online newsletter. It will have pages, like our calendar page that remaining up all the time (like a website) but also have room for posts (article that are added, rotated and archived month to month).

For example, recently we had posted a story of our January 2011 computer swap meet event in Scottsdale. The event has past, but the post still lives on in archives, just like any other news story.

If you would like to know when our next computer and recycling event is in Scottsdale, please check out our calendar page. It will always have the most up to date information. Our next event is Sunday, February 20th, 2011 (5:30am to 10:30am).
